Frankston Hospital Redevelopment Hits Major Milestone

23 July 2023

The Andrews Labor Government is on track to deliver the largest ever health infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s south-east, with structural works on the Frankston Hospital redevelopment now underway.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas today marked the significant milestone for the $1.1 billion project, with the first major concrete pours for the new 12-storey clinical services tower now complete.

As construction on the redevelopment reaches the one-year mark, crews have already undertaken more than 170,000 combined hours of work, with two tower cranes lighting up the Frankston skyline.

A third tower crane has also arrived on site – it takes on special meaning for the local community, named ‘Pinkies’ in honour of Peninsula Health’s longest running volunteer group, the Pink Ladies.

Elsewhere on site, 50,000 cubic metres of soil has been removed and more than 410 cubic metres of concrete poured to support the new structure’s foundations.

The project’s workforce continues to grow as activity increases, with more than 670 people – including 45 trainees and apprentices – working on site to date. The entire redevelopment is set to create up to 1,700 local jobs from construction to new opportunities for healthcare workers once operational.

Upon completion, the new facility will transform services for communities across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula, adding capacity to treat approximately 35,000 more patients each year – cutting wait times and reducing pressure on other Melbourne hospitals.

The redeveloped Frankston Hospital will feature a new clinical services tower and main entrance, 130 additional beds, new spaces for mental health and oncology services, an expanded women’s and children’s services and 15 new operating theatres.

Overseen by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Peninsula Health and the Exemplar Health consortium, main works on Frankston Hospital are expected to be complete in late 2025.
